Chapter 8

Cody and I decided to cancel choir practice for that day once it became evident that the storm wasn’t going to let up any time soon. I called Sister Mary to inform her of our decision, and she agreed it was best not to ask people to go out in the storm. Tara arrived at the cabin with Bandit zipped into her jacket at about the same time Cody showed up alone. I thought he might bring Rambler, but now that Mr. Parsons was home he’d left the dog to comfort the old man.

Danny lives on his boat, so he’d planned to spend the night in one of Maggie’s guest rooms, as he often did when it stormed. He was up at the house dropping off his overnight bag before heading over to the cabin for the meal we’d planned.

“Storm seems to be getting worse,” Cody commented as he took off his wet jacket.

“Yeah, it’s a bad one. Did Banjo and Summer get to Mr. Parsons’s okay?”

“Yeah. They’re going to stay over so they don’t have to drive all the way home in the rain.”

“That’s a good idea.”

Although Banjo and Summer lived just down the beach from Mr. Parsons, it was quite a long way by road. The three properties on the peninsula were serviced by a road that connected to the main highway. While Banjo and Summer could walk down the beach to Mr. Parsons’s house in less than fifteen minutes, to drive between the two properties you had to go all the way back to Pelican Bay, drive through town, and then catch the coast road along the stretch of beach that Bill Powell hoped to develop. If the development was approved Banjo and Summer would have to drive through the development in order to access their property.

I’d decided not to bring up the murder investigation until after we ate, and to avoid the topic of the unfortunate kiss altogether. As soon as each guest arrived I put them to work in order to avoid even a moment of uncomfortable silence. Tara and I put out the food for the burrito bar I’d planned, while Danny made the margaritas and Cody set out the chips and salsa. During the meal, which consisted of both beef and chicken as well as three kinds of cheese, both hot and mild salsa, and my special homemade guacamole, the conversation remained light and casual. By the time the third pitcher of margaritas was being passed around any discomfort that might have existed had been replaced with the comfortable camaraderie of four longtime friends sharing a meal.

“This storm reminds me of that time we unwisely decided to take Aiden’s boat for a joy ride when we were in high school,” Danny commented as a sheet of rain slammed into the window at the front of the cabin.

“Looking back, it’s a miracle we weren’t all killed,” Tara commented. “I can’t ever remember being more terrified in my entire life.”
